From 40 Hours of Chaos to 2 Hours of Clarity: Building University Insights
This is the story of how my own struggle applying to eight graduate schools—while working full-time—became the foundation for a platform that transforms the university application journey for international students worldwide.
The Wake-Up Call in Ghana
Prior to coming to Duke, I was working in the corporate world in Ghana. I remember the exact moment everything changed. One of my teammates had just secured a full-time position at Goldman Sachs after their internship. He had a master's degree.
Don't get me wrong—he was incredibly intelligent. I'm not saying I wasn't capable, but his experience gave him a definite edge. That experience, that master's degree, had positioned him differently. And I felt it.
After working in industry in Ghana as a computer engineer, I asked myself: "Is this the right time to develop myself and learn about new emergent technologies?" The answer was yes. It was time to pursue a master's program.
The 40-Hour Ordeal
I applied to eight schools: UCL, UC Berkeley, UPenn, Northeastern, Cornell, Carnegie Mellon, University of Michigan, University of Virginia, and Duke. All wonderful institutions with great engineering programs.
But here's what nobody tells you about applying to graduate school as an international student while working full-time: it's absolutely chaotic.
What My Application Journey Actually Looked Like:
- 📋 Taking time off work (sometimes unpaid) to focus on applications
- ✍️ Crafting unique narratives for each school's essay prompts
- 📄 Chasing down transcripts from multiple institutions
- 👥 Finding people to review my essays (again and again)
- 📞 Joining every application support call from all eight institutions
- 💰 Researching scholarship opportunities scattered across different websites
- ❓ Reaching out with questions about visa requirements, prerequisites, GRE scores
- 📧 Confirming if there were scholarship opportunities I'd missed
- 🗓️ Managing eight different application deadlines and document requirements
Total time invested: Over 40 hours of research before even starting applications.
I'll be honest with you—it wasn't easy. Putting all the assets together, going through the application process, it was hectic. But by God's grace, I was successful. I got accepted to all eight schools.
Why Duke? The Power of Funding and Flexibility
I chose Duke. And I'll be completely honest about why: Duke was able to give me enough financial support—enough capital, enough scholarship funding—to be able to pursue my dreams without drowning in debt.
But it wasn't just the money. Duke gave me this interdisciplinary approach to learning. The Design Technology & Innovation program at Pratt School of Engineering wasn't just about engineering—it was about human-centered design, product thinking, and building solutions that matter.
That financial clarity and programmatic flexibility made my decision clear. But here's the thing: I only discovered Duke's funding opportunities deep into my research. What if I had missed it entirely?
"What If There Was a Better Way?"
After I was successful, people started reaching out to me. Friends, colleagues, strangers on LinkedIn—all asking for help navigating the same chaotic process I'd just survived.
I supported them as best I could. But I kept asking myself: "What if I had an application that was more like a university insights and recommendation app? Something that provides all these resources in one place without you having to always go around trying to get this and that?"
"I told myself: That's the best way we can prepare ourselves as international students—to be better positioned to know what is required, whether it's GRE, visa documentation, prerequisite courses, funding opportunities, or application timelines."
This is where the whole idea of University Insights came from. Not from a class project. Not from a hypothetical use case. From my own pain.
From Idea to Intelligent Platform
I started with a simple question: "How might we empower international students to navigate the complex university application process by providing data-driven insights that simplify school selection and improve application success rates?"
Version 1.0: The Foundation
My first prototype was straightforward. You describe your preferences in natural language—location, academic reputation, international student ratio, employment rates—and the app would use K-Means clustering to group 1,422 universities from the QS Rankings dataset and recommend the top 5 matches.
I integrated the Gemini API to provide contextual insights about each university, answer follow-up questions, and explain the "why" behind each recommendation. The clustering algorithm analyzed 13 different metrics across 100+ countries to find patterns I couldn't see manually.
Initial Tech Stack:
- Framework: Streamlit (Python) for rapid prototyping
- Machine Learning: scikit-learn (K-Means clustering)
- AI: Google Gemini 1.5 Flash for contextual insights
- Data Visualization: Plotly for 3D scatter plots
- Data: QS Rankings 2023 (1,422 universities, 13 metrics)
- Design: Custom CSS/HTML for professional UI
Version 2.0: The Complete Journey
But as I reflected on my own experience, I realized: finding universities was only 20% of the battle. What about timelines? Checklists? Scholarship hunting? Understanding my actual chances?
So I evolved the platform into a comprehensive 6-page intelligent system that guides students through the entire application journey:
🎯 Smart Discovery

The Technical Journey
Building this wasn't straightforward. Here were my biggest challenges:
Challenge 1: Information Overload
Problem: 1,422 universities × 13 metrics = overwhelming complexity
Solution: ML clustering + progressive disclosure + visual hierarchy. I used K-Means to group universities into 25 clusters based on 3 key metrics, then presented results through multiple lenses: table view, 3D visualization, and AI narratives.
Challenge 2: Varying User Expertise
Problem: Some students know exactly what they want; others need guidance
Solution: Dual input system—natural language for beginners ("I want a tech school in California with good job placement") and advanced filters for power users. 70% use NLP, 30% use filters.
Challenge 3: AI Accuracy Concerns
Problem: Students need to trust the recommendations
Solution: Hybrid AI + static data approach. Clustering uses verified QS data. AI provides context and guidance but doesn't make the final decision. Disclaimers everywhere. Transparency builds trust.
Challenge 4: Design System Accessibility
Problem: International students access this on varied devices with different abilities
Solution: WCAG AAA compliance (21:1 contrast white-on-blue, 8.2:1 gold-on-blue), keyboard navigation, screen reader support, responsive breakpoints. Accessibility benefits everyone.
What I Learned Building This
1. Build for Your Past Self
The best products solve problems you've personally experienced. Every feature in University Insights came from something I wished I had during my application journey. That personal investment shows.
2. Data Without Context is Useless
I could show you 1,422 universities in a table. But without context—without knowing which cluster you fit into, what your realistic chances are, what funding exists—that data is paralyzing. Actionable insights > raw data.
3. AI Augments, Doesn't Replace
The AI assistant doesn't tell you where to apply. It helps you understand your options, guides you through the process, and answers questions. The human (you) makes the final decision. That's the right balance.
4. Transparency Builds Trust
I show the clustering algorithm. I explain the competitiveness tiers. I cite my data sources. International students are making life-changing decisions—they deserve to see how the sausage is made.
5. Support the Full Journey
Finding universities is 20% of the battle. Timelines, checklists, funding, essays, documents—that's the other 80%. A recommendation engine alone isn't enough. You need to support the complete journey.
What's Next?
This journey is far from over. Here's what I'm working on next:
